Presidents Report
Greetings GNMRC Members
Hello to you all

Charter President Wendy McIntosh

Hello all members of the GNMRC greetings to you in this Rotary theme month of Basic Education & Literacy. In our club health check-in conducted in June, members identified Basic Education & Literacy as an area of focus for our club for our strategic three-year plan.

I invite all members to consider who you would like to become a member of our club, invite them to a meeting. If you are in the S.E. Queensland area invite them along to our fun day on the 16th October - see content below on our End Polio now activities planned for October this year.

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 14th at 1830hrs Brisbane time and to inducting new member Maggie into our club.

Travel safe.

Wendy Mac

Basic Education and Literacy

Basic education and literacy is one of The Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus. We know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

GNMRC End Polio Now activities

As you are all aware Rotarians through RI have worked tirelessly since the 1970s to eradicate polio in the world. Currently, there are only two reported cases. In October each year, Rotary Clubs and Rotarians hold a variety of activities to raise awareness and funds for the End Polio Now campaign.

Our End Polio Now project lead Gail is very happy to assist members with any ideas they have in their specific geographical location. Gail can help develop flyers and posters to promote same.

To date there are three activities that members in Qld are organising. In S.E. Qld I am organising a Picnic for Polio event on the 16th October - I would love to see as many of our members as possible from Toowoomba, Ipswich, Wynuum, Brisbane come together, get to know each other more and have some fun. Feel free to promote with friends / colleagues invite them along to learn about rotary and our end polio now campaign.

Gail and Sue are organising two different functions in Bundaberg in October.

Aminata Maternal Foundation Project

A number of members have come together to look at how our club can assist / be involved in assisting Aminata with the work she does in Sierra Leone. Our initial meeting was on the 18th August and in the second one on the 1st September we had another great discussion this time involving Aminata who was able to join us.

The notes from that meeting are below, we are having another meeting on Wednesday 15th September 1830hrs (Brisbane time) and the invite is open to all interested members to join us to take the discussion further. We will use the same zoom link that we use for our regular meetings.

At our meeting on the 12th October 1830hours Brisbane time we will have Rebeccah Bartlett a nursing colleague who is a Rotary Fellowship recipient.

Prospective members update

I am delighted to say that all going well we will be inducting Maggie Harvey at our meeting on the 14th September.

Christine Parker has been accepted to be a member by you. Christine is not able to attend the meeting on 14th so we will plan to induct her on either Tuesday 28th September 0700hrs meeting (Brisbane time) or Tuesday 12th October 1830hrs Brisbane time

I have two new prospective members that I invite you all to consider and vote on.

Rudson Al Barcoma originally trained as a nurse in the Phillipines and now resides and works as an RN in WA, Australia. Rudson attended our meeting on the 24th August and I had a zoom interview with him following same. Rudson has an established history as a volunteer in both the Phillipines (HIV support) and in WA (Filipino-Australian Health Workers Association Peel Region Coordinator). It will be great to have another member from WA to support Tracy with club promotion and activities in that state.

Rudson currently works in aged care and is keen to extend his volunteer experience as a Rotarian

I will be Rudson's sponsor GNMRC member

This honour celebrates her exceptional contributions to the advancement of global health worldwide.
