GNMRC Solar Case Project in the Philippines represents a collaborative effort involving the Rotary Club of Pinjarra and the Rotary Club of Ozamiz North and medical and nursing volunteers. The initiative seeks to provide essential services and equipment to the remote community of Selinog Island. Here are some photos of the presentation of solar cases to the community along with free medical consultations, distributions of medicines, vitamins and foods which have been provided. More photos can be seen in the link below.
Typhoon season has arrived with a vengeance, with six major storms hitting the Philippines in less than a month. That same month, I was thrilled to receive the news that one of our major donors had offered matched funding for our annual Giving Day on the 10th of December. This means that all donations up to the value of $150,000 will be doubled! The good news is that you don't have to wait until Giving Day to double your impact and help people like those affected in the Philippines or the other countries where we're working. The page is open now!
Below, there's news from the Philippines, Bangladesh and Gaza, plus more details on the upcoming Giving Day. There's also information on next year's Cape to Cape trek, how you can write your will for free with our partner, Gathered Here and a great idea for a Christmas Gift that will last all year!
This month's quote comes from Anne Frank, "No one has ever become poor by giving."
Thanks for being part of the team. Stay safe.
Mike Greenslade CEO ShelterBox Australia
We are responding with emergency shelter after six major storms made landfall in the Philippines in less than a month. Each storm has brought more heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding to already affected areas. This has caused more damage and made the recovery much more difficult. Large areas remain waterlogged.
We are supporting people affected by Tropical Storm Trami (known locally as Kristine), and will expand our response to support people affected by Super Typhoon Man-yi (known locally as Pepito).
We have a local team permanently based in the Philippines and emergency shelter aid stored in Cebu. The country is susceptible to extreme weather and earthquakes and we are well-prepared to respond to tropical storms and other disasters. We have responded in the Philippines more than 30 times.
A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensified downpours, significantly impacting the northeastern and southeastern regions of the country. 5.8 million people across 11 districts have been affected as a result of the flooding, and over 330,000 homes are reported as being damaged or destroyed. Whilst floodwaters have receded, large areas remain inundated, affecting people’s ability to return to daily life.
About 4.5 million Kutcha (temporary housing made of mud and straw) and Jhupri (shacks made of jute sticks, tree leaves, etc.) houses that are common in the districts affected are susceptible to damage and destruction, so the full extent of damage to shelters is yet unknown. Our response will aim to support at least 700 vulnerable families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed. Construction work will address the fundamental need for a well-built and reinforced structural plinth. One hundred families whose homes were destroyed will receive a full reconstruction package for both plinths and shelters. Six hundred families with damaged homes will receive materials to reinforce their plinths, as well as cash to hire trained masons and purchase materials to restore their homes. All 700 families will receive cash assistance to help meet some of their basic needs.
Amany lives in a makeshift tent in a displacement site in the middle of the Gaza Strip. This tent is where Amany now lives with her children after a dramatic journey of displacement. Since November 2023, Almany and her family have been forced to multiple different places before arriving here. Mohammed (12 years old), Essam (11 years old), Waleed (7 years old), and her mother-in-law, share the tent with her.
On October 13th, 2023, the family were called to evacuate their home through an area where Amany’s husband, Ahmad, used to work as a paramedic. Whilst working to help save the lives of those injured in the conflict, tragically, Ahmad was targeted and killed. Amany and her children now live alone without any financial income.
Almany was first displaced to her father’s home where she stayed for one month, before evacuating to stay with a host family for seven months. Although the host family was based in an Israeli forces ‘humanitarian safe zone,’ again Almany was forced to flee and now lives here in this makeshift tent.
Amany said, ‘Suffering becomes multi-layered and intersectional, even when it comes to daily routine tasks such as taking care of my children. I start my day cooking for my kids, before taking my position in the long-standing queue for the joint bathroom, which needs a lot of patience and time.’ Amany spends her day performing different tasks, including filling, preparing, and cleaning water cans. They are living through constant fear and uncertainty.
The one comfort amid this chaos that Amany and other displaced residents in this camp share is that they are not alone. ShelterBox, in partnership with MAP and SDF, has supported Amany and her community with life-saving emergency tents and essential household items. The mattresses and water containers have had a significant impact on this community’s daily life. Amany explains how the water containers enable her to fill and sustain her needs for water, and the mattresses provide a better sleeping condition for her children.
‘Even though we’re living in a tent, my children and I feel safe because we know we are not alone; the aid we receive through ShelterBox and SDF is a beacon of hope, which makes our life better and enables us to face the challenges we have.’

Last month, our club treasurer, Jeff, prepared a wonderful slide show on life in South East Queensland, Australia. Unfortunately, he was unable to present, so Wendy stepped in. The slides below provide a beautiful description of this part of the world.

Shelter Box is an exceptional organisation that our Club has partnered with. They provide emergency relief to people around the world who have been made homeless by natural disasters and conflict.
We have pledged to fund five Shelter Boxes each year for the next 3 years. The cost is $1000 per Shelter Box and we raise funds for this through raffles and events held at Education Conferences conducted by the Nurses for Nurses Network and Education at Sea.
A big thank you to the work of Sue, Jason and Louise to make this happen. Shelterbox is very active in Turkey and Syria due to the recent devastating earthquakes.
The Rotary Solar Case has been developed, first and foremost, to provide light in remote health centres, aiding health workers where the availability of electricity is problematic at the best of times. The ability to provide portable lights for village birthing assistants is a major priority in areas where women often give birth in village huts or village health centres where the light from kerosene lanterns or mobile phones is otherwise the best available alternative.
If you want to know the date of any of the Club Meetings or Events then go to the events page on the website.
Meeting agendas and minutes are sent out by the club Secretary attached to an email a few days before the meeting takes place. If you are not receiving those emails then contact the Club Secretary on secretary.gnmrotaryclub@gamail.com
